Stay In Character Finding Your Space Between The Lines

I am reminded of one year when my wife (Nicole) took me to a dinner theater. It was so great. We had a beautiful dinner and one of the highlights of that evening was that the dinner was served by the actors. The cast served us dinner. However, though they were serving us dinner they never got out of character.

Just imagine the villain of the show serving you New York Strip with a big steak knife in their hands….Hmmm…Scary!

But for the cast to be successful for the next half of the show they had to remain embodied in character.

Stay In Character and Remember Your Lines

I believe that we should take the same approach as Christians. We must understand how important it is to stay in character. We may be faced with different challenges in life but we must work hard to remember our roles and follow the script (The Holy Bible) that God has written for us.

We are human and being human hurts at times.  However, this doesn’t let us off the hook for being rude, mean, vindictive and loveless.  God has reassured us in his word that if we maintain our integrity he will vindicate us.

Do you remember in scripture when God said, “Vengeance is mine said the Lord I will repay?”  God was telling us that it is better for him to deal with the situation of getting even with our perpetrators.  Why?  God wants us to be guiltless, pure and holy.  However, when we allow bitterness, anger, rage and revenge to drive us then we pollute our hearts.

God wants to protect us from such things because these behaviors become a breeding ground for Satan.  Satan loves darkness, filth and unclean places.

Remember this:

Satan will always show up and live in places that God has vacated.

The Bible says in Matthew 12:43-45,

“When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.  Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order.  Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

So this is why God wants our hearts to stay clean, holy and righteous.  He wants our temples to be a place where He can dwell and also offer us love and protection from the evil one.

When we are the temple of the Lord then we have access to our Father’s love, power, authority, presence and protections.

Jesus said in Luke 10:18-20,

“And He said to them, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”

Wow! Because we are His we inherit the blessings of God. So this is why we must stay in character.  I know it is a challenge to love your offender, to be kind to bad actors in your life. But this is the will of God concerning us (Believers).

Now, I believe we must excerise some common sense as well when making decisions.

If a person is mistreating you (being abusive verbally, mentally and or physically)then you don’t have to stay with that person. But we can forgive them and show them mercy from afar. We can still show them the love of Jesus though we go our separate ways.

God’s Grace and Mercy Can Revive the Heart

I remember when I did something so stupid and instead of my wife just ripping me a new one she instead showed me kindness and demonstrated the love of Jesus. You can’t believe how just staying in her role as a Christian impacted my life. My heart was melted within me and that simple act of kindness and mercy made me want to work hard to do right by her.

She stayed in character and God blessed her.

Well, I could go on and on about this situation but I just wanted to leave you with this. Don’t let bad actors steal your greatest role (showing forth the character of God).

Sometimes God’s blessings will come in the most stressful of situations. But let God be the one to administer vengeance on our behalf.
May God bless your life tremendously!

The Blueprint

We need to pray and ask God to help us protect our character.  It is so easy to get out of our godly character in order to show someone how much they have hurt us. However, when we trade our character for mere vengeance we give Satan a place to hang his coat and hat in our temples.

Pray this prayer with me:

Father in the name of Jesus God we come to you Lord asking you Father for your grace and your mercy. Praying God that you will keep us from the attack of the enemy. God help us Lord to be better people, to be change agents for your kingdom. Give us patience even in the most difficult situations. Help us Lord when we are on the brink of losing control. Lord give us directions. Help us demonstrate control. Keep us from all hurt, harm and danger. Help us not to take matters into our own hands when we have been wounded and hurt by others. Lord we thank you and bless you in Jesus name Amen.

New Bridges To Build

Sometimes we can spend too much time trying to clean up our past that we neglect the present.

The present provides us a new day to get our hearts right. A new day to gain prospective and insight on how and why I treat that person the way I did.  Whether good bad or indifferent the present offers us another portion of grace.

The present can also provide those person that have been wounded and hurt to find a place of mercy and forgiveness in their hearts for the offender.

If we can be honest its because of our messed up minds and hearts that offences come.  Sometimes it can be how we perceive a certain situation. Sometimes it can be because of how we were raised.

Nevertheless, if our hearts and minds are confused, self-centered,  bitter, selfish or bruised then there is a good chance that we will inflict pain on someone, (namely someone we love).

We all at some point will make mistakes.  We might even offend people sometimes. However, how do we excel in the present when we have damaged the past?  Well, I think we will have to embrace heart-felt repentance and humility.

We are incapable of time travel.  Back to the Future was a great movie about time travel.  However, in reality there is no time travel but there is humility.  I am “sorry” is a real word and can be extremely powerful when it is given in a sincere manner. Please forgive me for hurting you! Is a real statement when it is followed by sincerity.

So instead of trying to fix past all the time, how about spendingtime using the presence to be a better you.  When we become better within then we can truly offer heart-felt healing to others.

So, I believe we need to spend more time fixing our offences by humbling ourselves and building new bridges.  Spendtime fixing the presence and somehow it always makes the past a little bit easier to leave in the past.
